Depression-Live
DEPRESSION began in 1989 as a one-man project by its founder, driven by a desire to blend the brutal power of Death Metal with the speed and structure of Grindcore. With no local musicians interested, the first demo, “Tal der Tränen“ (1990), was a raw Noisecore effort shared with a few friends. By 1992, the second demo, “Vergessene Welten“, improved in sound and leaned toward Grindcore with Death Metal influences, gaining modest traction in Germany.
In 1993, Marc joined as vocalist, transforming DEPRESSION into a two-piece band. Their third demo, “In Verzweiflung…“, mixed Death Metal and Grindcore, earning global praise from fans and critics. After a hiatus due to commitments with DISMAL, DEPRESSION returned in 1995 with “Erinnerungen“, a successful re-release of their demos, selling out 400 copies and expanding their underground network.
The 1996 debut 7″ EP, “Ein Hauch von Moder“ (Gulli Records), marked a milestone with 800 purple vinyl copies and a tribute to BLOOD. It received widespread acclaim. In 1997, the split-CD “Böses Blut“ with AGATHOCLES was a high point, featuring a FEAR OF GOD cover and reaching new audiences. That year, a split 7″ EP, “Die Zeiten ändern sich“, with MAGGOT SHOES, limited to 500 orange vinyl copies, was hailed as one of DEPRESSION’s best, including an IMPETIGO cover.
In 1998, a split tape with HIERBA featured old rehearsals and live tracks, while “Ein Hauch von Moder (Part II)“ revisited their 1996 sessions. The 1999 split 10″ LP, “Und keiner weint uns nach“ with ROT, sold out quickly in two pressings and leaned heavily into Death Metal with an ABSCESS cover. In 2000, DEPRESSION celebrated a decade with their first full-length CD, “Chronische Depression“, including a MORTICIAN cover and tracks from their past releases.
The 2001 split-CD “Zur Stille finden“ with HAEMORRHAGE introduced Ron on vocals alongside Marc, covering AGATHOCLES. In 2002, “Schatten“ (split EP with GONORRHOEACTION) returned to raw, brutal roots with an ANAL CUNT cover. In 2003, re-releases of “Ein Hauch von Moder“ and the HIERBA split tape, alongside a 4-way split-CD, kept their legacy alive. The 2004 split-CD with MESRINE, released on CD and LP, included covers of TURBONEGRO and MESRINE. Friday, 17th of September 2004 was a historical day in the career of DEPRESSION! They played their very first gig at the “Deathfest“ to celebrate their 15-year-anniversary!
In 2005, DEPRESSION celebrated 15 years with the re-release of DEPRESSION / AGATHOCLES and the split EP “Der Weg des Wassers“ with FLESHRIPPER. The double-CD “Das Relikt“ re-recorded their 1995 demo with new tracks, including a DEFECATION cover. Vinyl and tape releases continued in 2006, including DEPRESSION / HAEMORRHAGE on LP. Another chapter was also closed in 2006, and it was a short one: The live-activity from DEPRESSION found their final performance at the AJZ Bahndamm in Wermelskrichen. A Live CD, “Ein kakophonischer Lebenshauch“, followed in 2007.
In 2008, a split-CD with PAGANIZER and a split 7″ with INHUMATE showcased varied Death/Grind styles. The 2010 20th-anniversary album “Dekade(nz)“ mixed Crust and Grind, and a GRAVE cover. In 2013, a split 7″ with ERODED returned to raw Grindcore, while 2014 saw a tape release of “Chronische Depression“ and a split 7″ with KADAVERFICKER. The 2015 25th-anniversary album “Die dunkle Dimension“ featured 25 songs, a DISRUPT cover, and a re-recorded “Ein Hauch von Moder“.
In 2020, DEPRESSION released their 30th-anniversary album “Ära der Finsternis“, featuring 30 songs, 70 minutes of music, including a cover of MASTER and re-recorded EP tracks, with guest vocals by Marc Grewe. On November 11, 2020, a split-CD with COFFINS was released on Hell’s Headbangers Records, featuring a Chris Moyen cover and exclusive tracks. The LP version of “Teufelskreis“ followed on December 30, limited to 500 copies. In 2021, multiple tape releases included “Ära der Finsternis“ and splits with HAEMORRHAGE and ROT. In 2022, split releases with NECROCANNIBALISTIC VOMITORIUM and OXIDISED RAZOR dropped, followed by a 2023 split-LP with REPUKED and a CD with RECKLESS MANSLAUGHTER in 2024, all limited editions.
Watch out for the brandnew masterpiece in Groovy Death/Grind !!!
